Baron Jöns Jacob Berzelius was a Swedish chemist. Berzelius is considered, along with Robert Boyle, John Dalton, and Antoine Lavoisier, to be one of the founders of modern chemistry. Berzelius became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1808 and served from 1818 as its principal functionary. He is known in Sweden as the "Father of Swedish Chemistry". Berzelius Day is celebrated on 20 August in honour of him. Although Berzelius began his career as a physician, his enduring
The most notable of Berzelius's contributions to chemistry was his development of a rational system of atomic symbols. Around 1810 Berzelius was working to confirm John Dalton's atomic theory as well as Proust's law showing that separate elements always combined in whole-number proportions.
Up through the early 19th century, naturalists and scientists observed critical differences between compounds that were derived from living things and those that were not. Organic chemistry was first defined as a branch of modern science in the early 1800's by Jon Jacob Berzelius. He classified chemical compounds into two main groups: organic if they originated in living or once-living matter and inorganic if they came from "mineral" or non-living matter. Like most chemists of his era, Berzelius believed in
The term comes as term to name study that learns about compound from biological source. He termed the name in 1806 as interest upon organic chemistry rose at that time.
